[ubuntu] How can set up server computer from Desktop to laptop

I'm attempting to set up a server using my old desktop currently running 7.10 Desktop edition, trying to access it from my laptop also running 7.10. Ive tried setting up a few things, VNC etc. but to no avail! any help is appreciated, ive been googleing for hours, so even if you can point me in the direction of another post.

Why not install the server version of 7.10 on your old PC then try to configure your network from there.

I'm linux retarded, I attempted to set up the server edition but i have no idea how to configure my WEP password and since I grew up with windows, I've become dependant on Graphical interfaces and clicking the next button until its installed. I'm also interested in using my Desktop as a Media Center I don't think that the server edition will play too nice with Amarok.
